Black Gate MUX
This is a repost of the message on my own LJ:|
Okay, here's the deal. Since I reformatted my C drive some time ago and I don't have the faintest clue where the links are to the individual MU* sites, I'm posting here about Heimdall's current status. I just wish I wasn't so much in the dark as I currently am, but I'll share what I know.
Sometime before my dad and I got home from our respective jobs Wednesday (which was, I guess, around 5:15 EST), we and everyone else on our grid managed to lose power. I have no notion why we lost it or how, but it wasn't just our house, so I would have thought we could just boot the machines back up and be on our way.
Unfortunately, that's not the case. Power came back on Thursday around 2:30, and while I powered up all the machines, of course (and thanked whatever gods there may be--Thursday night was in the 30's or so), Heimdall and Balder did not come up as planned. After some tests and fiddling, it appears as if Heimdall is reporting its HD to be about 10K in capacity, along with a number of other irregularities. For the record, it's unlikely we've actually lost any data, although I'm still keeping my fingers firmly crossed, just in case. It's much more likely a power surge fried the motherboard, and everything else is fine, even if we can't access it yet. Either way, Heimdall will be down for a little while, while we endeavor to replace the motherboard. Tomorrow, before I get taken to work, I'm going to ask my dad and see if he can't switch the HD to another physical machine, to at least test the HD and make sure it's alright. Tonight is a no-go, however; both my dad and I are busy at various places for tabletop games. Either way, we'll be back up and running as soon as humanly possible.
One more thing--I do not have IRC and will not get it (It's forbidden around here, a big security hole), but since I've spoken to a number of people on Black Gate and FFMux inside Starcraft, I'll be hanging out until my friends arrive tonight (around 9-10 EST) on the FFMUX channel on US West, since that was the usual place. If you have questions, drop by there, or if you don't have Starcraft, feel free to reply here. I'll be checking back here periodically.
I do have work tomorrow until 4 or so, but once I get home I'll be glad to get back online and see if I can be there to talk. I wish I knew if we will be able to get a new motherboard, but things are pretty well up in the air right now, we may have to do some testing and make sure that's the problem before we spend any money.
